On November 23, 1968, Kirsty Young was born in East Kilbride, Lanarkshire, Scotland.

She was born as the only child of her father, Joe Jackson, and mother, Catherine Jackson. She doesn't have any brothers or sisters. 

She went to Stirling High School and Cambusbarron Primary School. 

 In June 2008, she returned to officially launch the new building of the school. 

On the very first program of her debut TV show, she revealed to audiences that she had struggled with bulimia as a youngster.

Young chose not to attend university and began her work in the media as a runner and researcher.
