Birkin, a London native, began her acting career in minor roles in Michelangelo Antonioni's Blowup (1966) and Kaleidoscope (1967).

Her long professional and personal relationship began when she came across Serge Gainsbourg in 1968 while co-starring in the movie Slogan.

Birkin continued to work as an actress and singer after her divorce from Gainsbourg in 1980, acting in several films and releasing several solo albums.
